Returning to school to earn your teacher licensure can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re balancing work, family, and other commitments.
At Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), we understand the unique needs of working learners pursuing teaching careers. That’s why we’ve built a clinical program tailored specifically to the demands of our online bachelor’s degree programs in teacher licensure. With a steadfast commitment to meeting Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) requirements, we ensure that every candidate receives the support and flexibility they need to succeed—without compromising on quality or compliance.
Why Choose Concordia for Teacher Licensure?
CUW stands out as a leader in online teacher licensure programs for several reasons. Here are just a few:
- Tailored for Working Learners: Flexible scheduling and personalized support make it possible to balance school, work, and life.
- Faith-Based Education: Our Christian foundation informs our commitment to service, integrity, and excellence.
- Proven Results: Our graduates consistently excel in classrooms across Wisconsin and beyond.
A commitment to working learners
We recognize that most of our online students are already professionals with busy schedules. According to Dr. Adam Paape, Assistant Dean over initial licensure, “Our clinical program is designed with working learners in mind. We’re not just providing an education—we’re offering a pathway to meaningful, impactful careers in education while meeting students where they are in life.”
Our clinical program offers clear pathways to licensure for programs. Pathways include Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, and Secondary Education in English, Social Studies, and Math. These pathways reflect our dedication to helping students grow into highly qualified educators well-prepared to serve students in diverse educational settings.
Structured to Support Success
Every component of our clinical program has been meticulously designed to provide a scaffolded learning experience. Students begin with foundational observational experiences, which emphasize understanding classroom dynamics and seeing theoretical concepts in action. This initial phase allows students to immerse themselves in real-world classroom environments without the pressure of teaching responsibilities.
Following the initial observational experience, students progress through multiple pre-student teaching placements. These experiences build on the foundation by allowing students to actively teach, deliver content, and assess student learning under the supervision of DPI-compliant cooperating teachers. Each experience prepares students for the culminating phase—student teaching.
During student teaching, students complete a semester-long placement, progressively assuming teaching duties until they manage a full-time classroom load. Our university supervisors conduct regular observations to provide coaching and feedback, helping students refine their teaching skills and ensuring they meet state licensure requirements. “Our student teaching experience is rigorous yet supportive, giving students the real-world practice they need to succeed as educators,” says Dr. Paape.
Flexibility Without Compromise
The online bachelor’s degree programs are built to be responsive. They offer students the flexibility to complete clinical experiences at their current schools or workplaces, as long as certain conditions are met. This includes obtaining administrator approval and ensuring cooperating teacher meets DPI’s qualifications.
“For many working learners, completing clinical experiences at their workplace is not only convenient but also deeply meaningful,” explains Dr. Paape. However, CUW remains unwavering in our commitment to upholding DPI statutory requirements. Ensuring that every candidate’s experience aligns with state expectations.
Personalized Support for Clinical Experiences
Our clinical program is designed to ensure students have all the tools and resources they need to succeed. From assisting with placement applications to verifying cooperating teacher credentials, our team is committed to providing personalized support. Natasha Schmidt and Sarah Mayer work together to ensure students feel confident and supported throughout every stage of their clinical experience.

Portfolios: A Showcase of Growth
Throughout the clinical program, students complete a series of portfolio assignments, culminating in a final portfolio submitted at the conclusion of student teaching. These portfolios provide a comprehensive record of each candidate’s growth, showcasing their ability to plan, deliver, and assess instruction effectively.
Dr. Paape adds, “The portfolio process is an essential part of preparing for licensure. It’s not just about meeting requirements; it’s about reflecting on your journey and demonstrating your readiness to make a difference in the classroom.”
