The third of a three-part discussion this summer on social justice sponsored by Concordia University Wisconsin's Black Student Union (BSU), will be held this Wednesday, August 5, at 6 pm CT.

Eugene Pitchford, III, Black Student Union advisor, Dean of Students Dr. Steve Gerner, and undergraduate admissions counselor Nandi Mallett will again serve as moderators for a Zoom discussion entitled: “The Role of Higher Education in the Quest for Social Justice.”

The previous two sessions each attracted more than 30 participants and featured an open and honest exchange between students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents of current students. “We are looking forward to hosting another round of crucial conversation on race,” said Pitchford, an assistant professor in Concordia’s School of Education. “This one will explore what universities can do to better meet the needs of students of color, looking at best practices and hearing the voices of students.”

Pitchford noted that organizers have been pleased with the composition of the participants in the first two sessions. “They have provided safe, organic spaces for our community to communicate on race, listen to experiences of our students, and spark collaboration between faculty and staff, which were our identified goals,” said Pitchford.

Concordia’s Black Student Union is open to all students and strives to assist every student in building a sense of belonging, while providing a safety net to ensure a culturally responsive atmosphere.
