Dr. Matt Hurtienne

Dr. Matthew Hurtienne is now dean of the Batterman/Haab School of Business and Executive Director of Strategic Planning.


Concordia University Wisconsin & Ann Arbor is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Matthew Hurtienne as Dean of the Batterman/Haab School of Business and Executive Director of Strategic Planning.

At CUWAA, Dr. Hurtienne previously served as Associate Dean and led the development of CUWAA’s new Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. Before coming to CUW full-time in 2017, he served as Dean of Online Education, Curriculum, and Assessment at Moraine Park Technical College. In addition, he is the author of numerous scholarly articles on leadership, employee engagement, and online education.

“I love being a part of the CUWAA family, an institution with a strong Christian faith connection and an academic unit with a shared vision of academic rigor that collectively meets employment expectations,” Hurtienne said.  “It is exciting to be provided with the opportunity to engage the student body, alumni, faculty, staff, and businesses in a way that continues to meet our mission of developing students in mind, body, and spirit. The Business School has a strong academic foundation in place, and we will continue to innovate and develop learning opportunities to meet the future needs of our learners and business partners.”

Hurtienne holds a Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University, a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University, and a B.S. degree in Management from Southern Illinois University. His research interests include employee engagement and organizational effectiveness. Dr. Hurtienne’s teaching interests include human resource development and organizational performance and change.

Hurtienne has deep Lutheran roots, having served in various leadership functions at LCMS schools and churches in southeastern Wisconsin. He and his wife Laura (assistant professor of Leader in Innovation and Continuous Improvement at CUW) are members of Hales Corners Lutheran Church in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Hurtienne to his new role,” said Dr. Leah Dvorak, interim provost at Concordia University Wisconsin. “We look forward to the future of the School of Business as he brings his extensive expertise and a strong faith perspective to developing Christian business leaders to serve the church and the world.”
