Concordia welcomes award-winning author and reading education consultant Dr. Jan Richardson to speak at this year's event.


Concordia’s Graduate Education Department is pleased to offer the 5th Annual Literacy Institute. Featured speaker Dr. Jan Richardson will lead this day-long workshop highlighting her ground-breaking work on The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading.

Thanks to a generous grant from Dollar General, this year’s participants will also receive a free copy of Dr. Richardson’s The Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics.

“Dr. Richardson is one of the leading experts in her field, and we’re thrilled to have her lead this year’s Literacy Institute,” said Dr. Steven Witt, director of graduate education programs at Concordia University Wisconsin. “Her work is recognized and respected across the country, and we’re looking forward to an inspiring and educational event.”

Often called America’s leading expert in guided reading, Jan Richardson, PhD, is a former teacher and reading specialist. She is currently an author and education consultant, providing school districts across the country with customized professional development workshops and classroom demonstrations. Her best-selling “Next Step Collection” includes The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading, The Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention, and The Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics.

She is known as a very engaging and entertaining speaker, using both wit and wisdom to leave her audiences informed, motivated, and inspired.

The title of Dr. Richardson’s workshop for the 2021 Literacy Institute is “Making Decisions in a Guided Reading Lesson.” Participants will explore the guided reading instructional decisions needed to move readers forward in the elementary grades. Decision points include:

  • using assessments to group the students and pinpoint a focus
  • choosing an appropriate text
  • prompting for strategic processing
  • targeting phonics skills for guided word study
  • integrating the reading and writing

Participants will also learn how targeted guided reading lessons can accelerate all students.
