The annual Faculty Art Exhibition 2020 will take center stage on the first day of the spring semester in Concordia University Wisconsin's Fine Arts Gallery, 12800 North Lake Shore Drive, Mequon, Monday, January 27.
Presenting both new and old works are Dr. Gaylund Stone, art department chair and director of the graduate art program, Dr. Theresa Kenney, gallery director and professor of art, Associate Professor Jeff Shawhan, Associate Professor Paul Calhoun, Assistant Professor Charlene Nemec-Kesel, and senior instructor Sandra Buhk.
The Student Gallery will feature recent creations by Concordia University Wisconsin and Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design Graphic Design and Interior Architecture and Design students, while the 14 Frames Gallery will showcase a photography display based on the book, AFTERSHOCK: The Human Toll of War.
Seven decades after a small group of Army soldiers witnessed and photographed the end of World War II – from the blitz in London to the atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki – three photo historians combed through the National Archives to compile a book. Scanned directly from negatives, the small sample of photos from the book in this exhibit provide a powerful glimpse into the devastation and destruction of the conflict. Authors Richard Cahan, Mark Jacob and Michael Williams tell the stories of the young photographers whose lives were changed forever because of 1945. Cohan, a former picture editor for The Chicago Sun-Times, will make a special presentation on Tuesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in the university’s Terrace Room, preceded by a free, pre-event in the same room from 6-6:45 p.m. Advance registration is not required, although seating is limited.
Adjacent to the main gallery will be an exhibit by Concordia’s Justin Frisque entitled, “In Search of the Elusive Bobblehead.” Frisque, assistant director of audio visual, has acquired an expansive collection totaling 834 in the six years he’s been a collector.
“In all honesty, the hunt of tracking down an entire collection in the case of Milwaukee Brewers’ bobbleheads and the ‘game’ that brought to the search was the biggest draw,” said Frisque, who has expanded from sports to categories such as biblical, gaming and Wisconsin university mascots. Since he does not attend that many games with bobblehead giveaways, Facebook, E-Bay, Goodwill, and online trades and purchases are among the ways he continues to grow his collection. Nearly 10 per cent of the 834 were also given to him by family, friends and co-workers.
An Opening Reception with light refreshments will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 30 for all four exhibits that run through April 5.
The Fine Arts Gallery, located in Rincker Hall, is free and open Monday through Thursday from 4-8 p.m., and Fridays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m. Other shows this semester include the annual CUW Students’ Senior Exhibition, a CUW Drawing Students’ Exhibition in the Student Gallery, and a CUW Students’ Illustration Exhibition in the 14 Frames Gallery. All three of those shows run April 26-May 15, with an Opening Reception for all artists scheduled Thursday, April 30 from 6-8 p.m.
