CUW alumna Ruth Werning proves you never age out of serving the Lord with joy.
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s official newspaper, The Reporter, recently featured CUW alumna Ruth Werning. At age 103, Werning continues to demonstrate that God’s faithfulness never ends, nor does His call to serve one’s neighbor as He enables.
Werning has lived a full life of service to the Lord, as a Lutheran school teacher, a pastor’s wife, a mother to five children, and a frequent volunteer for a non-profit educational organization called Future Problem Solving.
In 2006, she moved to an independent-living apartment at Harwood place in Wauwatosa, where she continues to reside. Since moving there she has been an active volunteer, even emceeing the annual Christmas program put together by residents.
Last fall, she inspired a stadium full of Brewers fans while checking off a box on her bucket list. She threw out the first pitch at American Family Field for the Brewers vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game on Aug. 15, 2024.
“If I can witness just by my daily living, just by being God’s child in all that I do, then I will have completed my purpose in life,” Werning told The Reporter, “because that’s the only reason I’m here, to be a servant of the Lord.”
