Activity on Concordia University Wisconsin’s lakefront campus does not come to a standstill during the summer, even with a high percentage of undergraduate resident students at home.
The university will offer a myriad number of opportunities for people of all ages to visit and enjoy the beautiful, 200-acre campus located at 12800 North Lake Shore Drive, Mequon, from athletic camps and academic conferences, Lakeshore Chinooks baseball games, an inaugural summer theatre production of a popular Shakespeare work, the annual UPAF Ride for The Arts, or summer worship on the bluff Thursday evenings.
A record number of athletic camps are being offered this summer, including:
- Five basketball camps for boys and girls hosted by Wisconsin Coaches Scouting Services
- Six co-ed soccer camps as part of the Concordia Soccer Academy
- A Volleyball Camp directed by Falcon women’s head volleyball coach Janelle Gabrielsen
- A Wrestling Camp Led by head coach Corey VanGroll
- Several area high school football camps
A number of academic camps, including the ninth annual STEAM Camp under the auspices of the education department, July 10-14, and the 5th annual Concordia University System Society of Creation Workshop, July 6-9, are scheduled. Two STEAM camps – Tiny Treasures and Moving to Mars – cost $99 and are open to all learners in grades 3-8. More details can be found at www.cuw.edu/steam.
The second annual Summer Tech Camp will be held July 10-14, with separate offerings for youths in grades 3-5 (“Little Bits Tech”); grades 6-8 (“Robotics”) and grades 9-12 (“Mobile Apps”). Specific questions and details on registration should be directed to Asst. Professor Antoinette Spencer.
High school youths can attend a two-day Servants of Christ Conference July 9-10, providing information about choosing a college and career opportunities that would be a good fit. The cost is $25 and for more information contact Rev. Dr. Ron Mudge.
The Lakeshore Chinooks, a member of The Northwoods Wooden Bat League, the second oldest collegiate summer baseball league in the nation, will again play 36 home games at Kapco Park, located just to the west of the Concordia Center for Environmental Stewardship. The Chinooks open their sixth season of play on the road May 30, with their home opener on Saturday, June 3 at 6:35 p.m. against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. For more details, click here.
For the first time ever, a summer drama performance will be held on campus when Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be performed in the President’s Courtyard July 14-16 and July 21-23. A mini-Renaissance Fair pre-show will get the audience in the spirit of Elizabethan times and summer revelry, according to co-director Lori Woodall, theatre director at Concordia University Wisconsin. First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg will continue a tradition started 10 years ago when they hold a 6:30 p.m. outdoor church service in the bluff amphitheater every Thursday through August 2. In case of inclement weather, services will be held in the Chapel of the Christ Triumphant.
On Sunday, June 4, dedicated bicyclists will have the opportunity to take a break at Concordia on their way to the Summerfest grounds in downtown Milwaukee as part of the 37th annual UPAF Ride for the Arts. Concordia has served as a rest stop for this community event in support of the fine arts since 1985.
