Students from Mt. Lebanon Lutheran School visited the CUW campus to help Elementary Education students teach them a few things about floating and sinking.
Following a matinee sneak preview of Concordia University Wisconsin Players’ production of The Little Mermaid, some eager and excited kids from Mt. Lebanon Lutheran School had one more stop to make on campus. Groups of 1st through 4th graders paid a visit to a special STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) “lab” set up in the Albrecht Lounge to help give some CUW elementary education students a hands-on (and wet!) teaching experience.
After learning a few basics about why and how things float or sink, the children were challenged to make a tin foil boat that would support as many weighted plastic teddy bears as possible. “Whatever Floats Your Boat,” they called it. Rumor has it one group had more than 20 bears on board before their boat finally sank! Others were … not as successful.
Sink or swim, all the students (even the college-aged ones!) seemed to have a delightful time. They also enjoyed a fun, interactive Bible lesson at the end.
Way to go, kids! Thanks so much for coming to campus and brightening all of our days.
