Paige Kiesler’s dreams of being a teacher gave her the motivation to inspire and help other students in her life
From childhood dreams of playing school to becoming a dedicated special education teacher, Paige Kiesler’s journey in education has been one of passion, resilience, and unwavering faith. Currently pursuing her Master of Science in Education – Teaching and Learning with Special Education Licensure at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), Paige has embraced the challenges and joys of serving students with diverse needs while balancing work, life, and higher education.
A Calling to Teach
Paige’s love for teaching began at a young age. “I had a desk, a whiteboard, and educational booklets my dad would get for me, and I would spend hours pretending to be a teacher,” she recalls. That early passion only grew stronger as she discovered her desire to work with children and make a meaningful impact in their lives.
Now, as a kindergarten and first-grade special education teacher, Paige focuses on providing behavioral and math support to her students. She collaborates closely with her co-teacher, ensuring that each student’s individual needs are met. “The majority of my caseload consists of push-in behavioral minutes, though I also provide pull-out support for math,” she explains. “We each have separate caseloads but collaborate closely.”
Choosing Concordia for Growth and Flexibility
Paige’s decision to pursue her master’s degree at CUW was influenced by a colleague who informed her of a scholarship opportunity through the Racine Unified School District’s partnership with Concordia. The fully online program allowed her to continue teaching full-time while advancing her education. “The flexibility of the program made it possible for me to balance everything,” she says.
Beyond the convenience, it was the relationships she built that truly defined her experience at CUW. “The connections I made with professors and colleagues have been invaluable. I still keep in touch with some of them to this day.” Among those who made the greatest impact on her was Jeanette Knutson. “She is brilliant, encouraging, and always made me feel capable and valued in my journey as an educator.”
A Foundation of Faith and Purpose
Paige’s path has not been without hardship. She has endured profound personal loss, losing her mother at 19 and, more recently, the father of her child just seven months ago. Yet, through these trials, her faith has remained her anchor. “My faith in God has been my foundation. He has given me strength and guided me to this path as a teacher,” she shares. “Teaching is more than a career for me—it’s a calling. I love my students, and they love me back. They give me purpose, and I know I am exactly where I am meant to be.”
Learning, Leading, and Advocating for Students
Concordia’s emphasis on holistic education has reinforced Paige’s approach to teaching. “CUW has helped me understand the importance of nurturing not just academic success but also personal growth and well-being in my students.”
She has gained confidence in advocating for her students, collaborating with colleagues, and navigating complex educational needs. “I have implemented progress monitoring systems and behavioral tracking tools that help tailor my instruction. I’ve also learned effective ways to foster engagement through hands-on learning, structured routines, and positive reinforcement.”
The program has prepared her to lead and make informed decisions that serve her students best. “I have become more confident in advocating for my students, implementing effective interventions, and developing individualized education plans (IEPs).”
Advice for Future Educators
For those considering Concordia’s graduate programs, Paige offers heartfelt advice: “Stay organized, ask questions, and lean on your professors and classmates for support. The coursework is meaningful, and the faculty truly care about your success. Balancing school, work, and life can be challenging, but Concordia provides the flexibility and support needed to thrive.”
As Paige prepares to graduate in May 2025, she carries with her not only the knowledge and skills gained from CUW but also the deep sense of purpose that drives her every day in the classroom. Her journey is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the transformative impact of education.
