This semester we have worked to strengthen our connections to our local LCMS congregations in the South Wisconsin District by inviting their pastors to come and preach for our weekday Chapel services.
From Rev. Jonathon Bakker, CUW Campus Pastor:
One of the great things we are able to emphasize and support at CUW is the importance of the Christian congregation in the life of every Christian. As wonderful as our on campus worship services and our campus ministry programs are, Concordia is not a congregation. Every student (eventually!) graduates and moves on from here, and we pray they continue living out their Christian life in a congregation close to where they will reside.
By having local parish pastors on campus regularly–along with other called ministers within the LCMS– it not only highlights the ministries of those particular parishes – it reminds our whole community that the main work of the church happens in parishes where people gather in community to hear the Word of the Lord and receive His gifts in the Means of Grace.
Our goal in serving students is to support and deepen their connection to their home church, or, if they don’t already have one, to help them find a church where they may join others in Baptism, hearing the Word, studying the Bible, etc.
It’s been a joy having local LCMS pastors and other called LCMS officials on campus to preach the Word of God to our campus community! And I look forward to continuing this new tradition in the upcoming spring semester.
