What brought you to CUWAA?

Aside from the view, Concordia is somewhere that I can be me. The atmosphere, the mission, and the ability to openly incorporate faith were driving factors that brought me here. I no longer have to call faith ideals, beliefs, etc. but instead, I can call it what it is, our Faith.

What’s your favorite course to teach?

I haven’t taught with CUW yet but my favorite course to teach with Concordia Nebraska online was Social Gerontology (not just because I developed it). I have a feeling I will like Principles of Management (MGMT 130) just because it’s working with those younger students and getting them to think about the bigger picture and the “real world.”

Favorite course project?

As a student, I hated group projects, but in my MGMT 130 class I have put the students together into groups to teach them that, in management, they will have to work with others and not always want to.

What do you like best about mentoring students?

I want them to succeed. Being able to shape those learning experiences to help students grow as a child of God and as a participant in the larger world just speaks to me. I love seeing the connection between what is being taught and real life. And then showing them situations from other angles that they might not have considered. It’s teaching them to be better in everything they do because they want to, not because they have to.

Favorite Quote /Bible verse?

My favorite unknown quote is from my 3rd-grade teacher, Ms. Fintak who would always say, “When you point your finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at yourself.

Another favorite quote is from Bob Ross: “We don’t make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.”

My favorite religious poem is Footprints in the Sand but Deuteronomy 1:31 echoes it by saying “There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

Most helpful advice you received?

The two most helpful advice I have received are first to just breathe, and second, that year two is always better.

Which do you prefer Ice Cream or Cake? or Favorite dessert?

I love ice cream! To be honest I just like dessert in general. However, Mint Chocolate Chip, Moose Tracks, and Rocky Road are my top 3 ice cream flavors.

What is your favorite destination you visited? Why?

My wife and I honeymooned in Costa Rica 15 years ago. We toured the country from coast to coast. We stayed on a little island called Torteguero. Although we were in the middle of the rainforest, our huts only had screens. Every morning we woke up to the sounds of howler monkeys. We also witnessed an eruption of the Arenal Volcano, which went dormant in 2010. It is a beautiful country and we hope to go back!
