Concordia University Wisconsin and Ann Arbor has a new Dean for its School of Arts and Sciences.
Rachel Ware Carlton, DMA, began the role this week. She comes to Concordia from Lakeland University, where she served as Dean and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to Lakeland, she held various administrative and faculty positions at Silver Lake College.
Carlton holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her master’s and bachelor’s degrees are also in music. She earned her master’s from her doctoral alma mater and her bachelor’s from Luther College. Her principal instrument is voice.
A lifelong Lutheran, Carlton currently attends the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) congregation Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel, Wisconsin.
“I have been the beneficiary of the Lutheran education system, and I can think of no better way to prepare students for meaningful careers and lives of service than through a Christ-centered education,” said Carlton. “The faculty and staff at Concordia are dedicated to the mission of developing the mind, body, and spirit of their students. It is a great blessing to serve the students and community of Concordia in Mequon and Ann Arbor.”
About the School of Arts and Sciences
As Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Carlton will oversee Concordia’s broadest academic school. The School of Arts and Sciences encompasses the bulk of CUWAA’s liberal arts academic programs – including fine arts, science, history, communications, and math. It also houses the Concordia Core, a distinctive undergraduate experience that is at the heart of Concordia’s Christ-centered intellectual community. The Concordia Core is designed to instill in all undergraduates an appreciation for the tenents of the liberal arts, and to help them grow in their knowledge of God and their desire to love and serve others.
Carlton’s office is based on the Mequon campus, but her oversight extends to CUAA’s operations as well. At CUAA, the School of Arts and Sciences accounts for 24 percent of the campus’s undergraduate enrollment. Altogether, CUWAA offers nearly 50 academic degrees, mainly at the undergraduate level, through its School of Arts and Sciences, including in the areas of computer science, theology, political science, psychology, environmental studies, and more.
