The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs for accountants and auditors will grow by 6 percent from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. The 2023 median pay for accountants and auditors was $79,880 per year. Earning the CPA credential will net an even higher salary, as much as 10-15% according to the AICPA.
Robert Half reported that there is a critical shortage of accountants. The reason for this are varied, but include 1) fewer students are entering the field, 2) many accountants are choosing to retire, and 3) there is a decline in interest in obtaining the CPA credential.
