Senior Sam Butterfield reflects on his time at CUW as he prepares to graduate with his bachelor’s degree and MBA.

Growing up in a family of educators, Sam Butterfield spent his summers in school buildings but initially wanted nothing to do with teaching. However, as he grew older, he realized his calling was in the classroom. Now a senior at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) studying Business Education in the MBA Fast-Track Program, Sam has embraced the role of mentor, instructor, and role model, grounded in his faith and commitment to shaping future generations.

A Calling to Education

Sam believes that every student is “on purpose, for a purpose.” At CUW, he has found a university where faith is interwoven into education, allowing him to share his beliefs and positively influence students. “We are called by God to be role models, mentors, and instructors to future generations,” he reflects. The ability to combine his faith with his professional aspirations has been a defining aspect of his journey at CUW.

Faculty Mentors Who Made a Difference

One of Sam’s greatest influences has been Professor Balsman, who has brought real-world teaching examples into the classroom. “His classes are some of the most creative and informative I have taken. He loves to pull real-life examples from current teachers to show us what it is actually like out in the field,” Sam shares. At times, Sam debated whether to enter the business world before teaching, but Professor Balsman nudged him toward stepping into the classroom right away, instilling in him the confidence every educator needs.

Dr. Juergensen (affectionately known as Dr. J by students) and Dr. Alles also played a significant role in Sam’s journey. Initially, Sam planned to enter the medical field like his sister, but after taking some introductory courses, he realized it wasn’t for him. “Dr. J and Dr. Alles both took me under their wing and made me realize that teaching was probably my calling. They checked in with me, made sure I felt welcomed, and always encouraged me,” he recalls. The support from CUW faculty helped Sam gain confidence and embrace his strengths as an educator.

A Transformative Concordia Experience

Sam’s growth at CUW extends beyond the classroom. As a Resident Assistant and Soccer Captain, he has learned invaluable leadership lessons. “Freshman Sam Butterfield is a completely different version of Senior Sam Butterfield,” he admits. Through challenges, leadership roles, and self-reflection, he has grown into a man of God, ready to take on the responsibilities of his vocation.

The School of Education at CUW has further prepared Sam for his future by providing hands-on learning experiences and networking opportunities. “The classes you take for the School of Ed will be the most creative, interactive, influential, and network-heavy classes you will find. Professors here have so many connections with schools across the country that are at your disposal,” he advises. CUW’s emphasis on practical teaching experiences, shadow days, and professional networking has positioned him well for the next steps in his career.

Looking to the Future

After graduation, Sam plans to complete his MBA and pursue a business-related job before transitioning into teaching. He hopes to bring real-world experience into the classroom, helping students see the direct applications of business concepts. Eventually, he aims to take on an administrative role and coach basketball and soccer. “Concordia has made this possible for me by offering programs such as the MBA Fast-Track, where I can complete my MBA in just one extra year. The faculty here made sure we practiced how to teach in an atmosphere that accepts failure as a learning opportunity, not the end-all be-all.”

Sam Butterfield’s journey at CUW showcases the power of faith, mentorship, and hands-on experiences in shaping future educators. As he prepares to take the next step in his career, he carries with him the lessons learned, the confidence instilled by his professors, and the unwavering belief that he is fulfilling his purpose.
