On Friday, March 9, Concordia University Wisconsin welcomed 30 female high school students of color from Golda Meir School in Milwaukee to the inaugural Female College Readiness Summit. This Summit is a key initiative of CUW’s Black Student Union (BSU) and the School of Education to help more young women of color see themselves as college material. A similar summit for young men was hosted on campus in fall 2018.
“Many of these students have never visited a university before,” says Eugene Pitchford III, assistant professor in the School of Education and faculty advisor for the Black Student Union. “Whether they choose Concordia or another school, our goal is to get them to understand that they belong on a college campus.”
The busy Summit itinerary included an athletics session with the head coaches of CUW women’s volleyball and basketball, an information session with admissions counselors, guided campus tours, a student panel discussion, and lunch in the dining hall.
“I’m so grateful to Concordia and for our faculty and staff for being committed to making this an impactful experience,” says Pitchford. “We all are motivated to do what we can to remove any barriers or obstacles to a college opportunity.”
