A Passion for Teaching and Coaching: How CUW prepared Jay Walstrom to make a big difference in the classroom and on the field.

For Jay Walstrom, a graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin’s Master of Science in Education—Teaching and Learning (Physical Education) program, the journey to becoming a teacher was inspired by his time coaching at Ashwaubenon High School. Immersed in the school system, interacting with students and staff, he discovered a deep appreciation for education. “Being around the students and the staff really opened my eyes to the idea that this is a much better profession than I anticipated when I originally graduated high school,” Jay reflects. “I also remember going through school and thinking about ways teachers could improve their classrooms. Now, as a teacher, I have a fresh perspective on how students feel.”

A Concordia Education: Preparation for the Classroom and Beyond

Jay completed his student teaching in Spring 2024 as part of the Secondary Education program and now serves as a 7-12 High School and Middle School Physical Education Teacher and Coach. Reflecting on his experience at Concordia, he credits the program with equipping him with essential teaching strategies, classroom management techniques, and planning and preparation skills.

“There is a pretty respectable amount of material that I created as part of my coursework that I still use in my career today,” Jay shares. “The instructors at Concordia are incredibly knowledgeable, up to date, and excellent communicators. I always appreciated their timely grading and constructive feedback. I would highly recommend Concordia to anyone looking for a degree in education.”

A Meaningful and Rewarding Experience

For Jay, the most fulfilling aspect of his teaching journey is the connections he makes with students. “Getting to know them, watching them grow, and showing them that someone is proud of them is truly rewarding. It’s warming to know that you can make someone feel wanted and that they matter. Those things really stick with you as a teacher.”

His decision to continue his education at Concordia was an easy one. Having earned his bachelor’s degree at CUW, he was already familiar with the supportive environment, effective communication from faculty, and user-friendly systems like Blackboard. “When I decided to pursue teaching, I thought, ‘Why not? This school has given me no reason to look anywhere else.’ Plus, the alumni scholarship opportunity was really nice to have.”

Faculty Influence and Lifelong Learning

Among the professors who left a lasting impact, Jay highlights Professor Sid Larson as one of the most influential instructors in his educational journey. “Sid Larson is on the short list of the best educators I’ve ever had. His Disciplinary Literacy course was full of ‘ah-ha’ moments for me. Over and over again, he opened my eyes to new perspectives. I found myself saying, ‘Wow, now I understand why teachers do this or that.’ It was an unbelievable learning experience.”

Jay credits Concordia’s faculty and staff for supporting his growth as a teacher, providing him with the tools and strategies he now brings into his own classroom. “Everything I feel I need to be successful was taught and covered here at Concordia—classroom management, transitional skills, planning and preparation skills.”

Advice for Future Educators

For those considering Concordia’s School of Education, Jay offers a strong endorsement: “Hard to beat it. I would highly recommend it.” His experience has helped him grow as a leader, and he is grateful for the preparation he received.

Jay’s passion for education and his commitment to his students reflect the core values of Concordia—educating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. His journey from coach to teacher serves as an inspiring example for future educators who seek to make a meaningful impact in the classroom and beyond.
