Over two dozen athletic and academic camps scheduled to take place on Concordia's campus this summer have been affected by the pandemic, necessitating the cancellation of many and a change to a day camp format for others.
Several overnight athletic camps originally scheduled to take place in June, including two CUW Basketball Camps, had been pushed back to late July in the event that campus and residence halls were able to reopen.
The first of six CUW Soccer Academy overnight camps which were slated to begin June 7 have been changed to August day camps, according to head men’s soccer coach John Saleska. New dates are:
- Tuesday, August 4, 12-18 year olds, 8-4 p.m.
- Saturday, August 8, 3 v 3 for ages 12-14, 8-5 p.m.
- Wednesday, August 12, 8-11 year olds, 8-4 p.m.
- Saturday, August 15, High School ID camp
All instruction will be conducted by CUW coaches, including longtime coach Tom Saleska who won 324 contests during his tenure. Camp registration is open for one-on-one, small group and large group training, with awards and prizes to be distributed each day. Five teams have registered thus far for the Summer Tournament, with 34 individuals for the elementary school camp and 28 for the middle school camp.
Women’s head volleyball coach Janelle Katz has changed her traditional overnight camps in late July to day camps on the sand volleyball courts adjacent to the student union. “We have some great courts that we’ve used in the past for a session of our indoor camps and we’ve decided to offer exclusively outdoor sand camps,” said Katz. “We’re excited to try these camps and hopefully we can offer them every summer,” she added.
An All Skills Sand Camp for youths aged 10-18 is scheduled July 20-22, with a Prospect Sand Camp for youths 14-18 planned July 24-26. The cost is $210 per camp and includes a Camp T-Shirt.
One long-standing event, the 40th annual United Performing Arts Fund Ride For The Arts which has utilized Concordia’s campus as an oasis station for 25 years, went virtual this year on Sunday, June 14, two weeks later than originally scheduled.
