Recent studies reveal that Generation Z is widely regarded as the most environmentally conscious and sustainability-focused generation to date. Given that a significant portion of Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) students fall within this age group, it’s worth highlighting how CUW is actively prioritizing the environment.
For example, CUW is the only university in Wisconsin to feature an aquaponics system on campus. Located at the Center for Environmental Stewardship (CCES), this innovative system circulates wastewater from fish to nourish plants, helping to filter the water while producing an abundance of lettuce. CUW generously donates this lettuce to local food banks and community organizations, furthering its commitment to sustainability.
In addition to the aquaponics system, the CCES serves as a hub for environmental research and education, offering programs for elementary, secondary, and college students. As a LEED Platinum-certified facility, CUW ranks among the highest in environmental stewardship. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world’s most widely recognized green building rating system, providing a framework for healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings that deliver environmental, social, and governance benefits.
CUW also hosts a variety of public events, such as the CCES Environmental Art Show, to raise awareness about the importance of environmental studies and sustainability. These efforts demonstrate CUW’s commitment to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and learning among its students and the broader community.
Other environmentally friendly practices at CUW include business sustainability initiatives that foster innovative leadership and promote sustainable solutions. With access to three-quarters of the Lake Michigan shoreline, CUW ensures students interact with this precious resource responsibly. The campus features well-maintained trails for safe exploration and pristine beaches for relaxation. The coastal and perched wetlands also provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and sample collection, supporting hands-on environmental research.
Now, let’s focus on what students can do to be more environmentally conscious. Generation Z is known for its willingness to make lifestyle changes in ways other generations haven’t, and many of you may already be taking steps to live more sustainably. A simple and achievable first step is to carry a reusable water bottle instead of relying on single-use plastic bottles. And when refilling your bottle, choose tap water over bottled water—it’s a small change that has a big impact.
Another easy way to reduce waste is by using a reusable straw. Glass or metal straws come in various portable designs, so it might be worth getting one to store in your backpack. Next time you grab a drink at The Nest, bring out your reusable straw and skip the flimsy plastic ones. When shopping, always bring your own reusable bag. For takeout, look for alternative packaging options instead of relying on layers of plastic. To reduce waste even further, consider investing in a reusable coffee cup or reusing Amazon boxes for crafts or storage.
Take the time to educate yourself about environmental issues and consider spending some time at the CCES to learn more. The possibilities for making a positive impact are endless—every small action counts!
