The Concordia University Wisconsin Athletic Training Quiz Bowl team just won the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers' Association Quiz Bowl championship!

Concordia University Wisconsin Athletic Training Quiz Bowl Team wins competition

Concordia’s Quiz Bowl Team competed against other universities’ athletic training teams in Wisconsin in this annual event held by the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association (WATA). The WATA exists to help athletic trainers improve their quality of care for people who are physically active in Wisconsin. They do this through supporting and advancing the athletic training profession and certified athletic trainers.

Program Director Dr. Kate Liesener couldn’t be happier for her team. “I am extremely proud of our Quiz Bowl Team!” she said. “This year was full of challenges and they volunteered to take on the extra challenge of representing CUW at the state level. Alex, Bri, and Nicole represented our program with grace, intellect, and poise. This was great recognition for our students and our program!”

Preparing to become an athletic trainer

Athletic trainers are essential at any sporting event, and we’re seeing them more and more in the workplace. Additionally, athletic trainers play a critical role in preventing injuries as well as treating them. They work together with other healthcare professionals in order to provide the highest level of care and help individuals return to their activities.

But, have you ever thought about the training and preparation that goes into becoming an athletic trainer?

Athletic trainers learn by doing

Athletic trainers need to be very hands-on. Dr. Liesener emphasizes this in her program: “As soon as we admit students into the program, they’re working with patients. We send them to clinical sites early on.” These clinical experiences provide students with a variety of opportunities to be active participants in their learning. Some of the clinical sites include Concordia’s own campus, as well as local high schools and other industry partners. Concordia students have been placed with the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Milwaukee Ballet.
