students in London

CUW business students reflect on their first days studying business, history and culture in London.

This is the first article in the series, A quid for your thoughts, written by Concordia University Wisconsin business students participating in a spring 2026 study abroad experience in the United Kingdom. The series captures reflections from students as they explore the intersections of business, government, culture and faith abroad.

Touchdown in London

After an overnight flight from Chicago, the group arrived in London tired but excited for the week ahead. Rather than slowing down, students embraced the city immediately, visiting some of London’s most iconic landmarks.

From Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster to 10 Downing St., Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, the first day provided an introduction to the heart of British history and government. Seeing these historic sites in person brought to life many of the topics discussed during the first 8 weeks of on-campus preparation. It was a memorable way to begin the trip.

A morning of worship at St. Paul’s

After a full night of rest, day 2 began in the City of London with morning matins at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Worshiping in one of the most architecturally significant cathedrals in the world was an unforgettable experience. The cathedral’s choir and organ filled the space, offering a moment of reflection amid a full schedule.

Following the service, students participated in a brief walking tour of the historic financial district before traveling to the afternoon destination — one of the most prestigious venues in sports.

Inside the business of Wimbledon

At the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, home of The Championships, Wimbledon, the focus shifted to business operations.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament still played on grass courts — the original surface of the sport. As the oldest tennis tournament in the world, it maintains longstanding traditions while operating as a global sporting event.

Students explored the infrastructure behind the tournament, including event management, branding, logistics and international broadcasting. Standing inside Centre Court and No. 1 Court — where the semifinals and finals are played — provided a deeper appreciation for the planning and precision required to host an event of this scale.

An evening in the city

The evening concluded with dinner in Covent Garden, followed by a visit to Piccadilly Circus to experience London illuminated at night. The energy of the city, combined with the day’s academic experiences, highlighted how study abroad offers learning opportunities far beyond the classroom.
