Approximately 700 math teachers from across Wisconsin were on hand at “Celebrate WMC,” the annual conference of the Wisconsin Mathematics Council.
Earlier this month, three CUW Secondary Education-Mathematics students were awarded the Jane Howell Fellowship at “Celebrate WMC.” The students to receive the Jane Howell Aspiring Educator of Color Fellowship were traditional undergrad students Miranda Briones (’25) and Victoria Adam (’25), and Hector Gonzalez (’25), an online-accelerated undergraduate student.
Briones and Adam (pictured) were in attendance at the event with their families. Gonzales, who works as an educational assistant at the Lincoln Academy Charter School in Beloit, Wisconsin, was unable to attend due to illness.
Representing CUW at the event were Jonny Balsman, assistant professor of education, and Dr. Adam Paape, professor and assistant dean of education at CUW.
“We’re so proud of these students,” Paape said. “They are excellent representatives of what we teach and stand for here at Concordia. The extra financial help they receive through this fellowship is well-deserved and will go a long way toward helping them accomplish their goals as educators, and to serve Christ in the Church and the world.”
About the award
The Wisconsin Mathematics Council is “dedicated to connecting, supporting, and empowering the diverse mathematics community” in our state. The Jane Howell Fellowship is awarded through the Wisconsin Mathematics Education Foundation (WMEF). According to the website, “WMC and WMEF support and promote the need for greater racial and ethnic diversity among Wisconsin educators.”
Students are encouraged to reapply for the $2,000 award each year, with a maximum of four awards per individual.
