Business on the Bluff: Industry Leader Seminar

We launched our new Free Enterprise Center in the Batterman School of Business this past fall under the direction of Dr. Scott Niederjohn. One of the first initiatives undertaken by the Center was the establishment of a new “Economics and Politics on the Bluff” speaker series. Our inaugural event last October featured well-known Notre Dame University Adam Smith scholar, Dr. James Ottenson. Dr. Otteson presented a lecture titled “Moral Business” to a group of students, faculty, staff and community members. In the spring term, the Center is excited to announce four speakers that will be visiting Concordia Unversity Wisconsin.

Mary O’Grady is an editor of The Wall Street Journal and member of The Wall Street Journal editorial board since 2005. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Assumption College and pursued her MBA from Pace University in financial Management.

Karl Rove is an American Republican political consultant, policy advisor and lobbyist. He was Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff during the George W. Bush administration until his resignation on August 31, 2007. He has also headed the Office of Political Affairs, the Office of Public Liaison, and the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives.

Dr. Robert Lawson is a Clinical Professor and holds the Jerome M. Fullinwider Centennial Chair in Economic Freedom; he also is director of the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Cox School of Business. He earned his PhD and MS in Economics from Florida State University and his BS in Economics from the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. He previously taught at Auburn University, Capital University, and Shawnee State University.

Johan Norberg of the Free To Choose Network and CATO Institute. Johan Norberg is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a writer who focuses on globalization, entrepreneurship, and individual liberty. Norberg is the author and editor of several books exploring liberal themes, including Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future, named by The Economist as one of the best books of 2016; Financial Fiasco: How America’s Infatuation with Homeownership and Easy Money Created the Economic Crisis; and In Defense of Global Capitalism, originally published in Swedish in 2001 and since published in over 20 different countries.
