Concordia University Wisconsin's put its mission into action last month during the third annual Week of Service.
This year’s event took place April 15-21, and again provided students, faculty, and staff myriad opportunities to serve others. Dr. Randall Ferguson, director of Christian service, provided a recap of the week’s efforts:
- Those who attended Concordia’s Sunday night worship service, The HAVEN, collected dozens of used shoes for SOLES4SOULS in their Sunday evening fellowship.
- The Online, Continuing, and Distance Education Office filled six boxes with food and collected $270 in gift cards for Advocates of Ozaukee County.
- Concordia’s Kenosha Center collected two large boxes of pet food, treats, toys, leashes, and cleaning supplies for Safe Harbor.
- An indoor soccer tournament raised $287.15 for pediatric cancer research (GO4THEGOAL).
- Faculty, staff, and students bought 100 jars of peanut butter and 100 boxes of macaroni & cheese for The Guest House.
- Human Resources collected $310 for The Guest House from their “Jeans At Work” day.
- Faculty and staff made 500 sandwiches for The Guest House.
- 26 viewers attended a showing and discussion of the documentary “Milwaukee 53206.”
- 25 faculty, staff, and students “took over” Northwest Lutheran School for two hours to discuss education, vocation, faith, and Concordia University; the group also handed out hundreds of books.
- Chapel speakers talked about service using the same text: Matthew 25: 31-40.
- A special Tuesday Lunch Bible Study focused on “Exploring A Theology of Service.”
- Campus Ministry hosted a spring break missions reunion and ice cream social, attracting some 40 attendees.
- 60 faculty, staff, and students sorted food at Feeding America.
- CUW’s Madison Center collected several bags of items for The Beacon, a day shelter for the homeless.
- Concordia’s Green Bay Center collected a large box of needed items and purchased 15 hygiene care kits for the NEW Community Shelter, a ministry to the homeless.
- The Waukesha Center collected donations for Goodwill.
- The Appleton Center took a collection for the Emergency Food Pantry for the Salvation Army of the Fox Valley Cities.
- The Milwaukee Midtown Center made sandwiches for The Guest House.
- The Miller Park Way Center volunteered at St. Ben’s Community Meal site.
- The Beloit Center took a collection for Family Promise of greater Beloit.
- BCOM 300 students volunteered at the Mequon Nature Preserve.
- BCOM 300 students made wreaths for Habitat for Humanity.
- Snow forced a cancellation of the campus clean-up & barbecue.
- Concordians handed out approximately 400 blue WOS wrist bands to participants throughout the week.
