The R. John Buuck Field House hardcourt will be humming Friday and Saturday, January 26-27 when Concordia University Wisconsin hosts the 67th annual Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT), one of the nation’s oldest collegiate basketball tournaments.
Men’s and women’s teams from Concordia University Wisconsin, Concordia University Nebraska, Concordia University Chicago and Concordia University Ann Arbor will take part. The tournament begins with a 1 p.m. women’s game Friday pitting Concordia Ann Arbor vs. Concordia Nebraska, which has won the last four titles and eight of the last ten. Concordia Nebraska has also claimed three of the last four men’s titles.
Teams are matched up against opponents they did not face the previous year, a tradition which started at the 40th CIT in 1990. Complete first-round matchups on Friday are:
Women
- Concordia Nebraska vs. Concordia Ann Arbor, 1 p.m.
- Concordia Chicago vs. Concordia Wisconsin, 6 p.m.
Men
- Concordia Ann Arbor vs. Concordia Nebraska, 3 p.m.
- Concordia Chicago vs. Concordia Wisconsin, 8 p.m.
The host school traditionally plays the two late games on Friday. New to the event this year is a dance/cheer competition at 4 p.m. on Saturday. An All Alumni & Parent Social will be held Saturday at The Highland House in Mequon from 3-5:30 p.m., right before the women’s and men’s championship games.
During halftime of the 6 p.m. women’s game on Friday, a new class of inductees into CUW’s Ackmann Athletic Hall of Fame will be recognized:
David Benke – Basketball, 1996; Bret Corner – Former Wrestling Coach; Krista (Mayyou) Parker – Basketball, 2009; Nicki (Wiedel) Brazgel – Soccer, 1998; and Gary Griffin – Football, 1992/2001.
