This semester, I am taking 16 credits with quite a few of my multimedia communication classes, such as Advanced Film and Video Production, Multimedia Design, as well as a class called Careers in Communication. This class does have a professor, Mark Wolf, but he is mostly the person who calls and emails people to come in and talk to the class about a lot of different communication jobs we could possibly get into. We have had a lot of different kinds of speakers. We have had speakers from marketing and radio to videography and contracting, from advertising and publishing to sales and design. It takes a wide variety of angles from people doing a wide variety of things. They all have different stories, which they have plenty of time to do since it’s a night class on Tuesday. Much of the time, they start off with their story, how they got to where they got. Then they usually talk about what they are doing now, how they do it, the reason they like to do it, and perhaps some ways we could get into the field if we are interested. The person I liked the most was a man named Mike Stevens, the President and Founder of Smart Interactive Media in Cedarburg. He was a great, down-to-earth guy who wanted to create his own business because he’s been wanting to do it for a long time now, but never got around to it, and now he has it. These people are definitely a great way for us communications majors to expand our networking!
